Afternoon of Talks - Winifred Nicholson Exhibition

An afternoon of talks focusing on new exhibition Winifred Nicholson: Cumbrian Rag Rugs.

Speakers include relatives of Winifred, art historian and exhibition curator Jovan Nicholson and artist Rafaele Appleby. Joining them is textile artist and writer, Rachel Matthews.

Talks will take place 12.30-4pm.

Tickets are £20 per person, including refreshments and admission to the exhibition on the day.

More about the speakers:

  • Jovan Nicholson is an independent art historian and curator with a particular interest in modern British art. He curated and wrote the accompanying catalogues for Art and life: Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, William Staite Murray, 1920-1931 (Dulwich Picture Gallery; Winifred Nicholson in Cumberland (Abbot Hall Art Gallery); Winifred Nicholson: Liberation of Colour (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art). He is an acknowledged expert on Winifred Nicholson's work, a grandson of Ben and Winifred Nicholson, and a nephew of Kate Nicholson.Jovan Nicholson is an independent art historian and curated the exhibitions and wrote the catalogues for Art and Life: Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, William Staite Murray, 1920-1931; Winifred Nicholson: Liberation of Colour; Winifred Nicholson in Cumberland and Kate Nicholson. He is a grandson of Winifred Nicholson.

His talk will discuss the problems encountered when preparing the exhibition, the critical response to it, and what has been learned.

  • Rafaele Appleby is an artist who works from her studio on Hadrian's Wall in north Cumbria. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally, most recently at the 2024 Venice Biennale as part of the Proseed Collective, and alongside the work of her grandmother and daughter in The Nicholson Women at Crane Kalman Gallery in London.

  • Rachael Matthews is a textile artist, writer and educator originally from the Lake District, now leading East London Textile Artists and teaching textiles at Central St Martins, University of the Arts, London. Matthews is, perhaps most pertinently, author of Rag Manifesto, described as "a unique, artist’s view of the traditional art of rag rug making for this age of the Anthropocene". She also has work on display within the exhibition.
